Introducing Solids

May 3, 2017

Babies should only consume breast milk or formula until at least 6 months of age, then you can slowly introduce solids one at a time, if they are developmentally ready. Please continue breast/formula feeding while introducing solids. In fact, the World Health Organization recommends breast feeding up to two years or more. If you find your child is not thriving or has digestive issues, please see your pediatrician or contact a nutritionist.

Recommended First Foods Timeline

6-9 MONTHS

At this time use fresh (organic is preferable) vegetables and fruits to start, then organic meats and wild caught fish around 8 months.

Babies only take in approximately 2-4 tablespoons a day in addition to breastmilk/formula.

  • introduce organic pureed vegetables such as beets, sweet potato, carrots, green beans, strained green peas, turnip, cauliflower or broccoli to start. If baby led weaning (BLW), steam well

  • give same food for 3 days then if no reaction add a fruit; organic pureed pears, apples, blueberries, and later bananas and avocados

  • avoid citrus fruits, strawberries, kiwis, eggs, corn, and nightshade vegetables (potatoes, tomatoes, bell peppers, eggplant, cayenne), honey, shellfish, all grains, all dairy and anything mom/dad are allergic to

9-12 MONTHS

4-10 tablespoons a day in addition to breastmilk/formula

  • introduce nightshade vegetables, organic egg yolks, pineapple, peaches, legumes, onions, garlic, mangos, melon, kale (pureed, not stringy)

12-18 MONTHS

Their little digestive systems are maturing and can try more foods.

  • introduce nut and seed butters, whole organic eggs, gluten-free grains (rice, quinoa, millet, buckwheat).

  • can try plain organic yogurt/kefir closer to 18 months if desired.

  • raw honey after one year.

  •  organic strawberries and kiwis, watch for reaction if allergies in family.

24 MONTHS +

  • gluten grains like spelt, rye, barley, kamut, wheat in small doses and organic dairy products if desired but watch for reaction. These are all optional.
